Smoking Prohibition in public and workplace

Everyone is aware of the fact that smoking is injurious to the health of the inhaler and of the people around him. The question arises that is it ethical to restrict someone to practice something for others benefit or is it a right stance to restrict some practices for the betterment of the society and the environment. This concern has sparked an unending debated. There are people who support the ban on public smoking and there are other people with the opposite approach.

The most important reason for favoring the prohibition of smoking in working or public place is passive smoking and its adverse effects on the health of surrounding people. While the smoker is involved in active smoking, people around him are enforced to inhale carcinogenic air as a result of passive smoking. Health is indeed a blessing and people who care about their health avoid smoking. However, resisting second-hand smoking is not possible until the authoritative bodies place restrictions on smoking at public or work place. Moreover, smokers also disturb the working environment when they occasionally leave for smoking. In working hours, employees are expected to give their best, however, when some employees leave the working station for smoking, this not only affects their work but also the work of other employees who depend on them. Another reason for banning smoking activity is the raising environmental concern. Scientists assert that the environment of earth is contaminating day-by-day and smoking adds harmful inhalants in the air.

On the other hand, there are people who support smoking and denounces ban over smoking. Such people believe that every single person has his/her own right of choice and everyone must be given the liberty to practice what he/she wants. Smokers also argue that smoking does not disturb their work effectiveness, on contrary, it helps them to relives short term work stress. The increasing smoking rate is also because of the increasing depression and anxiety. To fight with such mental stress, people opt for smoking, as they believe that smoking is a medicine for their depression and anxiety.

It is true that every person has the right of choice, however, the particular choice of an individual must not distort other persons’ circle or reference. The ill effects of smoking to the smoker and to the immediate environment cannot be neglected because of the liberty of choices. When one lives in a society, he or she is bound to obey some rules which shatter his/her liberty of choices for the betterment of the society.

Social Actions

Max Weber, one of the most influential German sociologists, defined sociology as the science of social actions. It means any action in relation to other social affairs and other social actions. Max Weber himself differentiated such actions by given apt examples. A driver driving a car is performing a social action, however, a student reading a book is not performing a social action. From the former example, it has been learned that the car driver is performing a social action because his driving affects other, while the student has no social effect or social relation with other, therefore, he is not performing a social action.

The trait of being social is due to the effect one has on other social beings. Thus, social action is such an attempt in which one or more persons, belonging to some social system, participate. In social action, the actor acts in the presence of some social situation. Social action invites the attention of the actor towards action. When one or more persons are involved in the action in presence of social situation is also called the social action.

Elements of Social Action:

Talcott Parsons, a famous American sociologist, has given five basic elements of social action.

  • The Actor: it is the individual who performs an act. The actor can be one or more persons.
  • The Goal: it is the aim or objective of the action which was done. Without a set goal, any action would be futile and baseless.
  • Social Situation: the social situation is a continuously occurring group event spread in time and space. The actor performs his role in the presence of some social situation. The social situation instigates the actor on action, and to control the situation he has to act accordingly. Therefore, a social situation is the agent of any particular social action.
  • Normative Orientation: the social action is mainly performed on some particular social custom or pattern. The particular set of pattern, ideas, customs, or a particular society are known as the norms of the society. Every action is by nature oriented on the basis of particular norms.
  • Energy: A social action requires energy for its performance. Physical energy and training are essential for an act.

Pros and cons of organ donation

The pros and cons of organ donation initially try to determine what ethical base if any can justify this process. The issue is better answered in the communities that we live in, and which entails a concept of justice and moral obligation. Contrary to popular belief, live people can donate organs. A person does not have to be dead for him/her to be a donor. A person can safely donate one Kidney and live a healthy life with the remaining kidney. Part of a liver, lung or pancreas may also be donated by live people without any possible ill effects on their life or well being. Bone Marrow and blood can also be donated by a living person.

Research and write about the unethical aspect of donation, like the thriving black market for organs, especially kidneys that individuals in desperate need of money sell to wealthy people. Because this form of trade is illegal, individuals who donate their organs receive substandard medical care. The prime beneficiaries are the doctors who make tremendous amounts of money from these illegal transactions. The availability of cadaveric donors can ease the illegal trade in organs. The organ donation system depends on the unselfish concern by people for the welfare of others. However this altruism is not very common, so it is planned to launch incentive schemes for the procurement of organs.

The fear of dying while waiting for a donor induces people to deal with the black market, and they justify this by the ends served or the recipients living longer or leading a normal life. This black market discriminates because only people with money can afford these transplants. Legalizing this trade would probably lead to increased supply and lower prices, enabling the not so wealthy to afford transplants. There are thousands of patients in need of organ transplants, and it is estimated that in the United States an average of six people dies daily waiting to receive life-saving transplants. One donor can save the lives of as many as 25 transplant patients.

Steps must be taken to reduce the number of people who die because of the unavailability of donors. The determining factor in organ allocations should not be who is next on the list, but who has the direct and urgent need. The needs of critically ill patients should be given priority when determining organ recipients. To people with organ failure in any part of the world, organ transplants are gifts of love and life.

Should children be taught the importance of money?

$

In this materialistic world, everyone is in a constant race to earn money to make his/her both ends meet. In order to live a good life, the monetary acquisition is necessary. The young generation must be taught the importance of money so that they will learn the skills of managing money from early years of their lives. They will learn the ways to earn money and to spend money prudently. However, some people are not in the favor of early monetary education. They believe that children must learn other valuable things in their childhood such as moral principles.

There are many people who believe that schools must have finance as a subject in their curriculum. This will imbue children with the importance of money. Form the needs of life to the necessary healthcare treatments, money plays an important role. One cannot think of having all basis necessities of life without money. Moreover, the quality education and health services cannot be acquired if the person does not have money. Therefore, children must learn the value of money. When a child will learn that how important it is to earn money then he/she will start finding ways to make money or to save it for future. If they will not know the importance of money at their early age, then they will have problems regarding the acquisition of money in their later age.

On the flip side, there are people who believe that instilling the importance of money from the early years of life is wrong. Children are supposed to be free from all the worries of later life. If these innocent souls will be taught what money means then they will feel burdened with the future responsibilities. They should not be thought that the size of wallet is the sole parameter of one’s success. Money without love and happiness cannot bring success. Therefore, moral principles such as honesty, love, trust, etc, must be taught to children at their early age. They can learn how to make or spend money in later part of their lives.

Indeed, it is true that everyone must know the importance of money, but imbuing children with its importance at their early age is quite irrelevant. They can know how important money is in their later age. Therefore, there is no point of adding finance as a subject in the curriculum of small children. Money is not the sole measure of success, certain humanistic values also play an important role to accelerate one’s future. Therefore, such values must be taught to children.

Shakespeare’s Sonnets- Introduction and Themes

Shakespeare, the great and most influential English playwright, has not only shown his brilliancy in play writing but also has conquered the ground of poetry buy writing beautiful and musical 154 sonnets. The sonnets of Shakespeare are completely different form his plays. The sonnets do not have any of the signature dramatic elements of Shakespeare’s plays; these sonnets have their own class which separates them from the sonnets of other poets. Many critics believe that Shakespearean sonnets are autobiographical–deal with real events, but as no one knows enough about his life, it cannot be said that whether these sonnets are inspired by real and personal events or not.

The first 126 of the sonnets are addressed to a fair young nobleman, whom the speaker admires very much. From 126-152 sonnets are addressed to a dark mysterious woman, who is the subject of speaker’s love and hatred at the same time. The rest of the sonnets are not connected to any of the sets. This characterization is not done by Shakespeare himself, the editors have categorized the sonnets according to their content.

Themes of Sonnets

The most prominent themes of Shakespeare’s sonnets are the young man, the dark lady, immortality through verses, the rival poet, time and love.

The Fair Young man:

Shakespeare addressed 126 of his sonnets to an unidentified young man. This young man has shown having immense intellectual attributes and outstanding physical features. In first seventeen sonnets, the speaker urges the man to marry someone so that his beauty can be passed down to his offspring. In this way, he can attain immortality. Many critics have done too much leg work to solve the mystery of the young man. Most of them believe that the admiration and affection of Shakespeare for that fair man are out of his intention to flatter the man for his personal means.

The Dark Lady:

127-154 sonnets are addressed to a mysterious dark lady. In these sonnets, the speaker seems confused because he sometimes shows his hatred for the dark lady and sometimes his affection for her. Some critics believe that the reference of a dark lady is mere a literary rebellion of Shakespeare against the conventional obsession of contemporary and early poets with the fair women. Other poets have always praised the fairness of fair women; Shakespeare decided to revolt against them by praising the beauty of the Dark woman and showing his affection as well as his hatred for her.

Should children be allowed to follow their instincts?

“The child is the father of man”

The great English romantic poet, William Wordsworth, believed that a child is the father of man as he has knowledge which is not tarnished by human experience. This initial knowledge is, referred by many scholars as, intuitive knowledge or intuition. This kind of knowledge can never be acquired by any means; it is an innate capability of a child. However, this innate ability of child fades away as we imbue him with norms and principles of the society. However, there are many scholars who believe that child’s intuition cannot teach him those values which are acceptable by his society. Therefore, it is necessary to teach him the difference between what is acceptable and what is not acceptable. Those who favor teachings over intuition also believe that child does not have necessary experience to decide what is good for him and what is bad.

Those who believe that a child must be allowed to follow his instincts are of the opinion that a child is born with innate capabilities. A child must have freedom to explore his capabilities and potential and foster them. By providing children the opportunity to learn from their own mistakes and experiences, we can teach them to be independent and responsible. When we force children to follow the path we have chosen for them, then we actually deprive them of their freedom.

On the flip side, there are people who are against the concept of relying on the intuitive learning ability of the child. Such people argue that child’s mind is like a plain paper.  The mind of child needs guidance and teachings which cannot be acquired by means of intuition. Children are highly impressionable; they learn and imitate what they see. Therefore, it is better to tell them what is right and what is wrong, so that they would not imitate something which is bad and unacceptable. It is important to imbue children with valuable morals and principles of the society. If children will not learn, the difference between good and bad, then they will adopt habits that will conflict with the set-system of the society.

Conclusively, it can be said that child’s social upbringing is important. However, neglecting his innate abilities is completely wrong. Parents must allow their children to explore their potential and must help them to foster it. Children must have the right to choose their future career by knowing their likes and dislike. If parents will try to mold their child’s life according to their own will, then they will do a great injustice to their child.

Among many cultures in the world, especially Asia sex is considered a taboo and must be avoided in daily life conversations. It is something that is not very commonly discussed among some cultures. Talking about sex in such cultures is thought to be vulgar. There is a gap between parents and children and they cannot discuss or talk about sex so openly. Scientific method of studying

A scientific method is a scientific approach used to resolve a scientific problem related to the betterment of human beings. In order to resolve a specific scientific issue, a scientific method is adopted which consists of following steps.

Observation:

Most of the scientific investigations start with an observation. After selecting a specific scientific issue, observations are made to collect relevant information.

Hypothesis:

In the light of the observed facts and previously collected information or data, scientists make “intelligent guesses” as to what may be the possible answer or solution to a given scientific issue or question. This intelligent guess in a form of a statement is called hypothesis. Therefore, the hypothesis is a statement made by scientist about a certain phenomenon, on the basis of available information.

Deduction:

To test the proposed hypothesis, certain deductions, which are logical predictions, are made. In other words, deduction is the logical explanation of the given hypothesis. It does not require any type of experimentation. Here scientists explain theoretically and hypothetically that what the reason behind a particular thing is. A number of deductions can be made to explain the hypothesis. These deductions can be tested and verified by experiments.

Experiment:

The next step is to test and justify each deduction (prediction) practically to find out whether or not the hypothesis is correct. In testing the deduction, we are actually testing a hypothesis. This is where a scientist shows his skills on an experiment. Experiments are necessary to know the authenticity of a hypothesis.

Result:

The results of experiments are the conclusive factors. The result of an experiment verifies the deduction and hypothesis given by the scientist than the hypothesis is. If the result of an experiment does not verifies the hypothesis then this hypothesis is considered as invalid.

Theory:

It is not always possible to confirm a hypothesis immediately. The validity of a hypothesis rests on a gradual accumulation of indirect evidences. As more and more evidence come to hand, the hypothesis gets increasing acceptance and eventually is promoted to the rank of a theory. A theory is a set of scientific assumptions consistent with one another and supported by evidence, but not fully proved e.g. theory of evolution.

Thus, a scientist studies a problem in a sequential manner through observations, questions, hypothesis, deduction, test, or experimentation. A set of data taken from experiment, proves or disproves the hypothesis. A cautious attitude expressed in the form of criticism and further tests are performed until a satisfactory answer is obtained.

Science and Technology

Science and technology are closely linked to considerable countrywide objectives in many areas like health care, environmental protection, economic growth and national security. These connections essentially raise the question of what goals the nation should have for science and technology and how these achievements should be reflected in organizational arrangements, investments, and areas of research and development.

A technical innovation is the adjustment and understanding of resources, techniques and performs a particular task or function. The individual’s use of technology started with the transformation of organic resources into easy resources. Modern technology improvements, such as the publishing press, telephone, smart phones, and the Internet have reduced physical limitations to interact people to socialize conveniently on an international range. However, not all technologies have been used for ease off purposes. Science and technology have affected locality and its environment in different ways. Some technologies have collaborated more advanced financial system and allowed the increase of leisure class while many technological techniques produce unwanted products and harmful consequences.

There are many observations which must be kept in mind while setting national goals. The first is that it has proved impossible to predict reliability that areas of science will completely contribute to important new technologies. History shows that scientific research, which has led practical applications in areas, are far vanished from the original work. The results of DNA technology that led to the biotechnology industry derived from studies of unusual catalytic action in bacteria.

The difference between science and technology is always unclear itself. Science is the logical investigation and study of natural developments while technology is not usually the exclusive product of science. It is more often a consequence of science. It is generally considered too narrowly: according to Thomas P Hughes “Technology is a creative process involving human ingenuity”. This definition highlights the prominent role of mankind and therefore their responsibilities for the use of complex modern technological systems.

Technology is everywhere these days and has dramatically changed societies and landscapes. Scientists, engineers, designers and managers have believed that they can use technology to shape the world, as they want. They apparently realized that technology is easily manageable and this has to be thoroughly questioned. Recent research indicates that other primates and certain dolphin areas have developed easy resources and discovered to pass their understanding to other years.

Learning is significant when the student can relate new learning material with previous knowledge existing cognitive structure. On the other hand, that the task is potentially significant, the ideas expressed symbolically should be related to what students know or have cognitive sense to him. This internal process in the mind of the person causes a change in their cognitive structure in the newly acquired and that which is linked with information. Similarly, the concept of discovery learning to achieve meaningful learning, based on that through the same teachers can offer students more opportunities to learn for themselves. Thus, discovery learning is learning where students build themselves their own knowledge, in contrast to traditional teaching or transmitting knowledge, where the teacher intended that the information is simply received by students.

Discovery learning is especially effective in teaching the sciences, as reported in several studies results, in which students, employing strategies that promote discovery learning perform better than those where teaching is based on the transmission of information. Those educators who support discovery learning, consider it a consistent method of learning the ways people and allows students to progress to the extent that assimilates the new information. One of the most important characteristics of discovery learning is that the content to be learned is not provided in its final form, it has to be discovered by the subject, which requires an active role of the student, allowing you to apply learning to new situations. There are different forms of discovery, from a pure discovery, almost autonomous, to a guided discovery, guided by the teacher. In the context of teaching and learning in the classroom, it is mostly used the latter. The procedures of teaching by guided discovery involves providing students with opportunities to actively manipulate objects and transform them by direct action and activities to search, explore and analyze. These opportunities not only increase the students’ knowledge about the subject, but stimulate their curiosity and help them develop strategies for learning to learn, discover knowledge, in other situations. Whereas there is no real understanding, until the students to apply this knowledge in other situations, learning involves describe and interpret the situation, establish relationships between the relevant factors, selecting, applying rules, methods, and build their own conclusions. Moreover, in the area of knowledge, science and technology are protagonists of the changes that have taken place in recent times. Everyday life, the media, among others, mediates the interaction of society with different technological products and scientific knowledge.

Currently, the global trend is to achieve a comprehensive understanding of applied science, which states that in education is necessary to provide integration processes that allow students to access the world and participate in it. Balance the critic investigated It provides valuable outlined to improve teaching upper level and allows us to visualize where should conduct reforms and educational innovations elements. However, there are points that need to be improved: one is that most research analyzed on good teaching practices lack a theoretical foundation and show a “naive empiricism”; i.e. assume that the issue is not univocal and approached from a perspective that allows confront it and validate it. Moreover, the very concept of teaching quality debates awake, because to characterize a good teacher should go beyond a list of teaching skills; the quality is more than just a description of independent skills, so you have to take into account other aspects such as their professional identity, pedagogical beliefs, and commitment to the profession.

Jus in Bello is a yardstick of determining whether an act of terrorism can be justifiable. The first condition revolves around ‘discrimination and noncombatant immunity’. This aims at ensuring non-combatants and innocent civilians are immune from attack.

Likewise, the state waging war must take reasonable measures to ensure they use the minimum force required to secure the just cause in line with the doctrine of proportionality.

This ought to be done via legitimate means i.e. n means mala in se. states must shun crude weapons or guerilla methods that speak evil in themselves. There should be no war crimes committed to undermining humanity such as rape, treachery, genocide, forcible displacement of population and persecutions.

Once just war has been waged against an enemy combatant, there are humanitarian conditions that must be observed such as the dignified treatment of prisoners of war. This doctrine is called ‘benevolent quarantine for prisoners of war (Thalif 9)

Essay: Employee performance and Organization Turnover

Employee performance is one of the factor for turnover because if performance is good they are recognized for it thus they are motivated to work better and employee satisfaction is higher. Satisfied employees will never leave but dissatisfied will obviously exit (Jewell & Seagull, 1990).

Based on these reasons for turnover one can say recruitment process has a role to play in turnover but not entirely because other factors are more evident in causing turnover. Recruitment has an indirect relationship with turnover because if right people are hired for the right jobs they will be satisfied and turnover will minimize automatically. But recruitment is a complicated process that is not perfect enough to always give correct results since discrepancies exist and that is where other factors come into play that cause turnover.

Factors like recruitment or hiring practice, style of management, no recognition or reward system or lack of a good compensation system are all reasons for turnover so recruitment is just one of the factors that cause turnover and improving just one factor will not have a significant effect on minimizing turnover since it is important to work on all factors to reduce turnover but of course it depends from organization to organization and situation to situation (Abbasi & Hollman, 2000).

Association in extracurricular exercises furnishes undergrads with chances to meet and interface with different understudies, investigate regions of premium, and add to the grounds and group. The quantity of projects accessible is stunning, with some grounds bragging more than 1,000 understudy associations from which to pick. With such a large number of decisions accessible and the weight to succeed apparently expanding, understudies can without much of a stretch get to be overpowered with their association outside of the classroom to the degree that it bargains their scholarly achievement.

With Collision (1990) reporting that understudies spend just 30 percent of their waking hours within the school classroom, understudies have various choices for investing their out-of-classroom energy. Institutionally supported understudy exercises can serve to improve understudies’ encounters in the classroom. Astin (1984), as reported by Evans, Forney, and DiBrito (1998), contended that “for understudy learning and development to happen, understudies need to effectively take part in their surroundings” (p. 27). Understudy exercises do without a doubt give chances to understudies to end up more occupied with their school surroundings. Understudies required in extracurricular exercises report creating higher certainty, closeness, full-grown interpersonal connections, and reason (Hood et al., 1986; Hunt and Rentz, 1994; Williams and Winston, 1985; as reported by Evans, Forney, and DiBrito, 1998). Pascarella and Terenzini (1991) report that numerous studies have demonstrated the connection amongst contribution and its positive relationship to constancy, instructive achievement, ensuring profit, social self-idea, and ladies’ decision of sex-atypical vocations. Creating abilities, for example, planning, arranging, and setting courses of events, and creating groups and interpersonal correspondence would all be able to be certain results for understudies occupied with exercises. Schein and Laff (1997) contended that extracurricular contribution can likewise serve as one device in helping undecided understudies limit their decision of major.

Understudies may get to be overextended in their extracurricular tries for various reasons. Decisions are copious for the understudy searching for a chance to get included. One current pattern inside understudy exercises is the development in the quantity of understudy associations accessible to understudies, a considerable lot of which are littler gatherings that are fragmenting from bigger, more extensive associations as understudies attempt to discover their corner (Reisberg, 2000). Numerous understudies feel weight to end up broadly required in exercises with a specific end goal to exhibit initiative experience to potential managers or to fabricate their résumé for further scholarly applications, as some graduate and expert projects require a set number of hours or encounters for confirmation. Also, a few colleges are requiring administration association for graduation. Different understudies may learn more delight from their out-of-classroom encounters than from those inside, proposing an educational programs or profession way confuse. At last, a few understudies look to understudy associations to create social and passionate associations and can without much of a stretch choose to commit more opportunity to these connections, and consequently to the understudy association, by ignoring academic work.

Essay: Financial Bonuses are Part of Compensation Plan at GE

It is notable that financial bonuses are part of the compensation plan at GE. However, such bonus plans need to be reviewed. GE should look at changing their system of bonuses to make them more obtainable and raise compensation benefits to be comparable with competitors (GE healthcare, 2012). The problem arises when the issue of bonuses is linked to unachievable targets.

It is only wise that the targets are lowered to achievable levels such that it is ensured that employees are able to realize the set targets and thus win the set bonuses. When the targets are too high, employees overwork themselves hoping that they are able to achieve them and thus be compensated.

If it happens that after overworking themselves, the employees are unable to reach the targets, they feel discouraged and may even relax to the extent of working below their capacity. Happier, less stressed employees would mean a lower turnover rate and most likely an increase in production. In conclusion, GE is on the right track with benefits but their compensation plans could use some work.

Imagery is used to express the feelings of the poet; “garners, grain”, ripened grain” which all reinforce the idea of the fulfillment of time. The harvest is being used as a paradox as though it is being used to express the completion and fulfillment of an activity; it is being used to define the completion of a certain activity it is being used to define the end of time as well. Images are presented which allow Keats to perceive the deeper meanings behind these natural or physical phenomena “huge cloudy symbols”.

Love is shown to be a cause of concern and confusion-it is actually as important an emotion as it is perceived to be or is just another feeling which has been given undue importance. His concern with time becomes even more evident by the end of the poem as there is a repetition of the word “when”. Love is given two qualities-the ability to change the entire world for the people experiencing this emotion and it is more of an involvement of emotion rather than of thought.

China made several specific concessions in its public policy on its accession to the WTO that have a direct bearing on the wholesaling, retailing and logistics sectors. Foreign companies will be allowed to import and distribute most products by 2004. New regulations permitting foreign equity ownership up to 49% in the wholesaling and logistics sectors allow full ownership after three years.

This means that international retailers, manufacturers and third-party service companies are being encouraged to invest in the full range of logistics services such as storage and warehousing, packaging, trucking, air courier services, freight forwarding, after-sales servicing and the provision of consumer credit. U.S. and EU officials are actively monitoring China’s commitments to reform entered into as part of its WTO accession agreement with the US government and European Commission. (Kacker, 15)

China is a market many perceive as providing tremendous retailing space and opportunities for development of foreign FMCG retailers. The country is also an important strategic sourcing location for non-food consumer goods, which are playing an increasingly important role in the competition to maintain average retail margins at an international level. Nevertheless, China may not be a market as easily and readily conquerable as foreign FMCG retailers hope.
